My name is Erik Wingren and I head up User Experience Research for Snap. My job is to identify and validate design opportunities that are informed and inspired by the behavior and experience of Snap Users. In other words: I work for You.

On Tuesday, November 14, 2006, Snap launched a new service called Snap Preview Anywhere.

Since then, we have released — and intend to continue releasing — updates to the service. These updates are largely defined based on the feedback that users of Snap Preview Anywhere™ share with us.

Give it to me straight — the good, the bad and the ugly!

I love Snap Preview Anywhere™, it's awesome :)
I came across Snap Preview Anywhere when visiting a friend's site (they were using it). As soon as I saw it, I thought to myself, "This is so cool! I must use it on my site!". Keep up the good work! :D

I would like to try Snap Preview, I saw it on http://highearthorbit.com/ and it was impessive looking, however I just tried to load www.snap.com and it seems to be 404.

thx
RH

Thanks for your encouraging words.

Daniel15: If you end up implementing Snap Preview Anywhere™ on your own site I hope you will consider coming back here and share your experience.

rrhobbs: Did you get a 404 when visiting Snap.com or was it the preview popup that somehow failed?

Cheers.

Erik Wingren

I was getting a 404 but not with a 404 message, the page would just load a blank- eventually I started to suspect maybe you were in my Spybot Search and Destroy hosts file, and sure enough, there you were. It was no small task removing snap.com that hosts file is HUGE and bogs down the whole machine working with it, but I did remove the entry and will try out Snap Preview. Gimme a week or two I'll let you know what I think.

p.s. dont feel bad having been (presumably predatorily?) placed in the SSD blacklist database, I had to fish metafilter.com out of there the same way. You might want to contact SSD.

thx
RH

rrhobs,

We will contact safer-networking.org to see why we are on the blacklist… Thanks for the heads up!

Cheers.

My experience? Abysmal - sorry.

I had Snap activated on my blog and recommended it (snap, not my blog) in a widely read forum.

I then got a lot of complaints that the previews wouldn't work, e.g using Firefox on a Mac. I wrote a trouble ticket, and then got this reply:

——-
You are correct. For safety reasons, the minimum requirements are XP
(any version) and IE (v6.0 and up). It MAY work on other Windows
versions. It will NOT work in any other browsers.

Sorry.

Brad
Snap Customer Service
——-

From that moment snap was history for me. It's not coming back to my site any time soon.

Kyri: Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear it was bad… and what's worse is the fact that it apparently is based on a misunderstanding…

Brad may have misunderstood you trouble ticket. Your friends on Mac/FF may have experienced a temporary bug or some sort of performance issue… but one thing is without a doubt:

Snap.com and Snap Preview Anywhere™ are fully compatible with both Firefox and Safari on the Mac platform.

I should know since I work on a Mac.

You do what you need to do Kyri. If you change your mind I hope you come back here and share you (redux) experience with me.

Cheers.

@Erik

Two things:

1)
This is what I sent to snap:
—–
Snap does not seem to work with FireFox on Mac OSX (tested
with FF 1.5.0.7 on Mac OSX ). It just shows an empty white rectangle.
—–

I'm not sure how this feedback could be so grossly misunderstood in your Cust Service department, as it apparently has (but this is something to be checked internally)

2)
I use a Mac too, and I could confirm the FireFox hiccups at a time the snap previews showed up flawlessly on Safari (looking at exactly the same page)

Kyri,

Thanks for helping to clear this up. I traced it back to an email sent from you to our general customerservice email account and it was mistaken to be relating to an affiliate toolbar download that is in fact XP/IE6+ only… Sorry about that misunderstanding.

But back to the original subject of your comment:

I had Snap activated on my blog and recommended it (snap, not my blog) in a widely read forum.

I then got a lot of complaints that the previews wouldn’t work, e.g using Firefox on a Mac…

In response:

  1. Snap Preview Anywhere™ is designed to be fully compatible with all "standard compliant browsers". We officially support IE6+, all flavors of Firefox and Safari.
  2. This is the first report of browser incompatibility that I am aware of… and I'm still inclined to think that you and/or your friends experienced a temporary glitch of some kind.

Question: Are you still experiencing problems triggering the Snap Preview Anywhere™ bubble? In Firefox for Mac or any other platform/browser?

Cheers.

Erik Wingren

Kyri,

Sorry for my error. We have quite a few products. There is the search engine, Snap, we have jobs.snap.com, and a news.snap.com, plus several downloads, plus we have a toolbar deal with a partner deal called MyPoints.

Your question sounded like a frequent question we get about the toolbar.

Sorry I led you astray.

My experience was also bad - I'd installed it but it didn't work. why? because my site was served not as HTML but as XHTML document.

When I changed it snap popup finally appeared, but in wrong position (I guess that it happened because body on my site has position:relative, width and margin:0 auto)

If you fix that problems snap will surely come back to my site.

Roberto,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I will relay your concerns to our dev.team.

Cheers.

Erik Wingren

The snap tool was super easy to install and everytime I show it to my friends they are impressed by the feature. You can see how I implemented it at my blog http://www.illinoisforeclosurepro.blogspot.com.

Keep up the good work!

foreclosurepro,

Glad to hear you had a good experience. Please consider coming back here in a week or two and tell us how it is working over time.

Cheers.

As a real estate broker I am always looking for ideas to help my business, but more importantly help my clients get their homes sold, and help buyers find a home faster. I have found that the more homes are exposed to potential buyers the faster they sell. Great for both buyers and sellers. My clients can go to my website & use snap to take a quick view of homes, virtual tours, etc. If they see what they like the will click over and preview more that the home has to offer. That's important to business because it takes less time to find the perfect home. I just added snap to my real estate website http://www.behomesaferealty.com and love the extra little umph it gives my site compared to other real estate professionals in our area. I am still in the process of adding IDX software to the property search pages of my website but once completed I know it will kick butt over the competition. I just want to say thanks and I will continue telling other agents that work with me to "snap" to it! If you have questions or comments about my website please let me know. Dear Erik,

I like the snap preview very much, but somehow it doesn't work well on my weblog (www.verbaljam.nl). It looks as if the preview script doesn't finish completely, because it keeps showing a box 'loading snap preview' under the preview image. Maybe it's a conflict with another script, but I can't figure out what. Maybe it's a known problem to you, so I thought: I better ask then. ;-)
Do you have any suggestion/solution?
Thanks in advance!
Arnoud

verbaljam,

You are using an older version of prototype.js but we modified our code to be more forgiving. Your site should be displaying Snap Previews better now.

Cheers.

Erik Wingren

Thanks very much for your efforts, Erik! I don't know what the prototype.js is, let alone that I know about an older version, but everything seems to work know. ;-)
I'm happy.

Erik,
i think your product is great! ..no glitches..was sooo easy to install..i was impressed (and im not the kinda girl that is easy to impress!!) …you guys did ALLLL the work for me.. i know this isnt very helpful, if your trying to identify glitches and what not,…. but i thought y'all deserved a pat on the back! so cheers!! this vodka tonic is for y'all!!

suicide_blond,

Hi Erik,

I was wondering if you could tell me what would cause my previews not to show up on my blog? I'm using the Snap Preview AnywhereTM Plugin v1.1. I can confirm that I've set the options to display previews and I have my key in there as well.

I get the rollover, but it always says "preview unavailable at this time". I can also confirm that the plugin is configured to add the code to the footer, and after looking at the source I see it there. My blog is www.familywebwatch.com/blog .

Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

davincim,

The "Preview unavailable at this time"-message usually indicates a bad token, but I double checked your key and it is valid.

Start by editing the domain variable in the .js tag to "www.familywebwatch.com" — in other words take out the "/blog" — and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help: since you are using Ajay D’Souza's plugin for the self-hosted version of Wordpress I encourage you to check the support forum for that plugin.

Cheers.

Hi, I just wanted to say, I love this! It works great on my forum :)

I only have one question though. Can the snap preview work on MSN MySpace? If so, then how?

I think it's a great idea — a lot of people seem to have missed the use of Snap in NSFW scenarios. Sometimes, you have a website that you are unsure of, because it might not be safe to visit from work. Something like Snap would be useful under those scenarios.

That said, I think Snap should be inclusive, rather than exclusive. By this, I mean that rather than have a user specify the links that s/he does not want previewed, Snap should only preview those links that the user specifies to be previewed.

That way, every external link is not previewed by default.

The other problem is that of right-clicking — there have been times when I have right clicked out of habit to open the new website in a new tab/window, and the preview popup appears right over the menu bar. But I think this is a learning issue (i.e. we are not used to having a preview, so we do not pause/react to see if there is something else in the space where the menu pops up).

Either way, great idea! Way to go, guys.

Metlin,

Thank for the feedback and especially for pointing out how the functionality can conflict the the right-click contextual menu. Never thought of that one…

Re: inclusive vs. exclusive — this is doable today. As you can read in the FAQ you can disable previews by adding/changing the ap-parameter from ap=1 to ap=0 and then add the class "snap_preview" to any link/element you want the functionality to work for.

Please observe that you can add the class to any kind of container element — div, table, td, span etc.

Cheers

Hi Erik,

I went to the forum as you suggested. I saw someone who had the same trouble and walked in their footsteps. Basically, all I did to get it working was to regenerate a key. It's fine now. Thanks for your help!

Ken

Experience good so far; is it possible, i wonder, that some sites do not allow previews to be captured?
In my last post title the linked website is previewed as a blank page, but the correct URL is shown and the linked page loads fine.
Best from Italy :)
Luigi

Luigi,

It is technically possible. A site owner could tell our preview crawler (user-agent SnapPreviewBot) to not capture their site… but I highly doubt it in this case.

Let's test it. The following is a link to the index page of BuzzMachine.

Fwiw: We are working on a system that will allow end-users to "ping" our preview crawler and request re-capture.

Cheers.

Erik Wingren

UPDATE:The link above previews fine. This means that your link failed to do the same due to a temporary glitch on their side where the page did not load within the "attention span" of our crawler… I will submit that URL to be recaptured.

Much obliged Erik!
I'll keep an (RSS) eye on this Blog and these comments …
Ciao,
Luigi

Seems that snap preview was down yesterday, but all seems to be fine again! :)
How often does snap preview update the snapshots if at all? I'm just curious becuase I just changed the templete on one of my sites a couple of days ago and the preview is still showing the old layout.

Keep up the great work! :)

Raven: You're right — our preview crawler was down briefly right around that time… Currently we just re-crawl at some interval. We are working on a more sophisticated scheme but unfortunately I can't give you an ETA for that. In the meantime you can send an email to spacustomerservice@snap.com and request a one time re-crawl.

Good Widget

Thus far it has added an aesthetic and user friendly touch to several websites - one flaw is the inability to customize the Snap Preview Box Table background Color to blend in with the background color or image of a Website.

It is perfect for Websites with white or pale yellow background colors - but not so harmonious with certin dark colored background WebPages

Perhaps it could also combine a traffic stats script along with the preview script - thus giving Stats to Webmasters from just one widget

All I got was complaints from users so I removed the code. I, personally, was getting irritated at seeing it on every site I visited. I don't find it helpful on the average blog but on sites that link out a lot and on Wikis I find it helpful. Oh well.

justelise: I hear you. As a site owner you have a responsibility to your users and the preview functionality should be used in a manner that is useful to them. Period.

I just hope that you keep checking out Snap Preview Anywhere as the product evolves — I can tell you that we are just about to release a bunch of under-the-hood enhancements that will address some of the usability issues that I imagine your users complained about. More about this on the index page of this blog shortly.

From everything I have read, either on the Snap site or in comments from users, getting Snap Preview Everywhere should be… well, a snap !

However, I can't get it to work on my site, www.360kmh.com. I have read above that somebody else was experiencing difficulty with an XHTML site, versus simple HTML. Mine is XHTML. Is it why I cannot get Snap to work ?

As long as there are hyperlink, Snap Preview Anywhere works.

Oups ! Sorry, I finally got it to work. It was most probably caused by a script in my CMS which conflicted with Snap. Got around it and it works fine. I wrote a piece on Snap, for the trouble ! It is in French though.

Glad to hear you worked it out.

I have just uninstalled Snap from my PC on recommendation of a PC Tech Forum as I was having persistant popup issues since downloading SNAP.

Is this the case?

Since I have followed their advice on uninstalling a number of files I don't have a problem.

Is your software bundled with other software to cause popups?

Absolutely Not. It must be a misunderstanding. Would you mind sharing the source of that information?

Is there any way to enable Snap Preview to display the target pages of Google Ad links? This would encourage visitors to my website www.majikradio.com to click-through on the links. This could conceivably increase my daily earnings from an average $0.03/day to a mind-boggling $0.10-$0.12/day.

Response from Snap Customer Service:

Sorry, we don't do that now.

I checked with a programmer and Google ads are in iframes, which means
that they are - in a sense - on a different web page, not on the page
with the Snap Preview Anywhere code. If the SPA code were on the page
framed by the iFrame, the SPA previews should work fine.

I have found this to be a very nice plugin for my blog. However, I want it to work to capture links in my posts, not everything else. Some of the links in my posts are internal, so I had to enable it to capture internal links. Unfortunately this makes the entire blog a mess. Perhaps it should only captures links in a post or page.

A good comment I'd like to say is that I love the MP3 player used. I work with sound quite a bit and am disappointed with many virtual MP3 players online. When I turn the volume down on those, at some point a ton of frequencies get cut off. However, with this MP3 player, the frequencies are still there, everything is equalized beautifully. The other thing I hate about others is that if it is too loud, some frequencies are drowning everything else out or are too loud. However, like I said before, this one equalizes everything. Great job!

Glad to hear you like AudioShot.

Here's a link to the Snap Shot FAQ where you'll find detailed instructions on how to fine-tune the script.

If you still can't find a solution, please send an email to customerservice@snap.com, with a link to your site and a detailed description of your issue.

Cheers.

Erik
