Efficiency:
The first thing I'd look at improving is the clientside JavaScript that each user's downloading. It's nearly 30kb and if that could be halved you'd be using a lot less bandwidth and it'd be faster for people.
One area it could be improved in is using iframes rather than storing & generating the html in the JavaScript. This would mean only users clicking the preview download those additional bytes.
That would translate into additional bytes for users previewing urls but less for anyone who doesn't, and probably an overall saving.
Interactivity:
User ratings, comments and site reviews could all be added to the preview.
You could also consider adding "related sites".
More Information:
I imagine a lot of your userbase is tech-oriented, you could add alexa rankings, google rankings coral cache information.
Security:
IE, FF and google are doing the whole "anti phishing / spyware" thing now - you could have some sort of report that notifies users if the site is malicious.
All of those features could of course be made optional, preserving the 'traditional' preview for sites that don't want to add them.
hi fkr2,
I would definetly not recommend using iframes as there are very buggy and do not work in the same way in different platforms and browsers. I would recommend the following
The current look and feel of snap is good ,but it can certainly be improved. I would like snap to be simple but really easy to use, just like google which has one of the cleanest interfaces but still provides the best search results.
1.When tested extensively on snap-enabled websites on different machines and different browsers, one sees that snap does not work everywhere till the snap plugin is installed. So if a website is snap enabled but no plugin is installed on the system a pop up should launch prompting the user to install the plugin.
2. User should be able to configure the size of the preview window that launches, in a manner similar to browster.
3. Webmasters should have the option of integrating snap widgets on their sites which would list the best snap enabled sites on the internet, and would enable the user to view headlines and highlighted items in the link that is being previewed.
4. Currently the loading of the preview takes a lot of time, this should certainly be made faster.
5. Snap Can provide search facilities in the same way like google and can share revenue with the website owner.
Heya,
These are both great ideas… please add them to the mix on the SPA Extreme MakeOver Contest site…. where you can qualify to win. Posting them here is great, but why not get the community involved as well?
Go here and post your ideas! http://contest.snap.com
