My friend is a fairly successful blogger who posts weekly on his all-things-design blog and retains a readership of a couple of hundred loyals. The other day he told me that, two years after putting ads to his site, he just received his first check from his Ad Network.

The problem: Small publishers can either accept the way things are, or risk alienating their readers by increasing the number of ads.

This got us thinking…

Imagine if ads could be shown when and where they are most relevant — pacing the users as they interact with your content, and offering an alternative path at the very moment they are evaluating the information scent of your outbound links.

Imagine highly contextual and relevant advertising displayed underneath the main content of the Snap Shot.

Imagine Site Owners that have Snap Shots running on their sites getting a fair share of the revenue generated.

Imagine a truly seamless integration with your already existing Ad Network's account system.

Imagine… (you fill in the blank).

The working title of this concept is Snap Shares and we would love to know what you want to see in an advertising program.

I love the idea! As long as it's not obtrusive. Congrats on a brilliant script with so much potential. I have it on all of my recent sites.

Can't argue with the need to monetize the service in this way. Snap Shots is one of those ideas that you love or hate, but it is great to be able to have the ability to see what is coming next, without leaving where you are.

Just out of interest, have you looked at integrating it with an automatic tagging tool, to show relevant linked pages of interest? There's a blog at http://www.panttaja.com/jim/ which attempts to do it using the Jiglu.com auto-tagging widget with Snap, but the previews are too small - It would be great to see the relevant information in a smaller preview pane

@ davebear

That's interesting. I wonder if he intended for Snap Shots to trigger on the Jiglu tag topics as well as his regular links?

We actually have a similar'ish technology running in the background, which generates the "Related Searches" you sometimes see underneath the main content area of the Snap Shot, and very likely what we would use to ensure contextual relevance of ads displayed inside the Snap Shot.

cheers.

"Imagine Site Owners that have Snap Shots running on their sites getting a fair share of the revenue generated."

For me, this line is the best of the bunch. If you can put together a model that compares in revenue to AdSense then I'd definitely be interested.

Thanks to Paul Angles (marketing director, Snap) for visiting my site and asking me to return to leave my commentary. How any self-absorbed blogger could resist that kind of attention, I haven't a clue. ;)

Paul visited my site in response to a post I had written concerning Snap! and advertising in their Snap Shot service. That post may be seen here:

http://addh.blogspot.com/2007/09/oh-snap.html

I neglected to mention - in fact, I was in error in not mentioning - that a possibility for site owners to receive a slice of the ad revenue existed. My blog post implied that it did not. I have since made that correction, and my apologies to Snap! for the error.

However, my stance … erm, stands firm. If advertising is to be shown on my site, I want to have a slice of the pie. That Snap! is considering it is commendable. Since it is our sites that present the advertising, and present the Snap Shot service front and center, it's only fair that we receive some form of compensation from advertising.

I run a wordpress-based blog located at http://gadgetsandsuch.com, and I just installed version 1.3 of snapshot. I was expecting the newly announced snap share feature to be in the latest download, but I do not see any of that.

Is the snap share news release way ahead of the feature being included in the software, or did I miss something?

TIA

We are publishing as I type this. 30 more minutes and it should be up and running…
