Starting today, Snap.com is disconnecting a group of sites from the Snap Shots network. We've never had to take such drastic measures before and wanted to make sure that everyone knows what's going on. These particular sites, which we won't name, have been "hacking" our systems by setting up fake accounts and using our website previews in unapproved ways. The sad part is that they were welcome to use Snap Shots for free to accomplish the same objectives, but only if they followed the rules. We're very proud to provide our Snap Shots to over 2,000,000 sites and blogs every day. We've invested millions of dollars to create an infrastructure that serves the freshest previews almost instantly on every link on each of these sites. Naturally, we're going to do whatever it takes to protect not just our service, but also the user experience on the sites that trust us. That's a sad state of affairs, disappointing to hear but there are TOS for a reason!
I'd like to see more options to use Snap for development personally, perhaps a licensing fee option would make sense if people want unbranded content using your snap shots which is one part of the technology you guys have that works brilliantly. I assume that's what they attempted to hack, as I've not heard about this particular exploitation until now.
Having developed screenshot systems over http with html parsing myself I know it's not easy and I'm sure there would be a market Snap could harness there - seeing as there's no open solution available elsewhere either.
I would tend to agree EXCEPT for the following. The main snap.com website /about/feedbk.php is the only way I have found to contact them (except by phone) an that page is a dead end, the so called 'select a rating' does not show anything to select; the form does not have a submit button which makes it impossible to even send them feedback.
Now, the reason I was even attempting the feedback was because I was trying to find out how to report TWO MAJOR bugs with their snapshots javascript code, one of which i consider a SECURITY problem.
BUT NO LUCK :-(, there appears to be no way to contact their support (if they even have one) department.
Possibly you're using an old, or non standards compliant browser and the button hasn't loaded correctly? Anyway, the guys at Snap have always seemed pretty easy to get hold of to me, especially Paul!
Nice job on spotting the javascript bugs though - is there really a security risk there it seems unlikely that a javascript running on a website from a 3rd party such as Snap could expose any more holes than any javascript that you could run with say… Greasemonkey?
Oh, vabid, don't be silly. Of course we have Customer Support. She's the one on the home page video holding the sign that says "1 million+…"
Go back to http://www.snap.com/about/feedbk.php. The submit button is in the lower right corner. "Select a rating" is a mouse-over-and-click.
Snap Shots is completely dependent on and completely responsive to user feedback. We've made literally hundreds of fixes based on specific user input and we very much would like to hear what you have to say. If it still doesn't work, please try another browser and let us know or at least comment back here.
